Mimi was rearranging the antique trunks and wooden crates in the foyer when Kelly pushed open the shopâs front door. She fairly pounced on Kelly when she entered.
âKelly, whatâs this I hear about your trying to trap this vicious murderer?â she croaked in a whisper, so the customers browsing in the adjacent room wouldnât hear. Her gray eyes were as round as demitasse saucers.
âShhhhh,â Kelly reminded, finger to lips. She didnât have to wonder if Mimi was worried. She radiated anxiety, reeked with it. Kelly took a deep breath and endeavored to calm her. âDonât worry, Mimi. Weâre all working on this together. Iâm not going off alone to confront anyone. Even Burtâs helping.â
Mimiâs attractive face puckered into a worried frown. âI know, he told me. But I still donât understand why you canât just let the police handle it. After all, youâve found new evidenceââ
âWhich is entirely circumstantial, Mimi. Nothing Iâve uncovered proves anything. Gretskyâs been too clever for that. Weâre hoping to confront him and maybe heâll slip and let out the truth.â
Mimi stared horrified. âHow?â
âWeâre still working on that,â Kelly hedged as she headed for the main room. âBut donât worry, Mimi. No oneâs doing anything crazy. I promise.â
Everyone but Lisa was already seated around the library table as Kelly entered. Even Burt was in his corner, spinning, a large plastic bag at his feet overflowing with golden-blond wool. Kelly was reminded of the fairy tales from childhood. Damsels spilling golden hair from castle windows, witches casting spells on maidens, dwarves spinning straw into gold. She had to smile at the image of Burt beside a basket of straw.
âHey, everyone,â she greeted them, then let her things drop to the table and sat down. âWhenâs Lisa coming? Anyone know?â
âRight now,â Lisaâs voice sounded as she sped into the room.
Jennifer looked up from her knitting and checked her watch. âWhoa, thatâs the fastest youâve ever been able to get away from the health center. Whatâd you do? Put all your clients in the therapy pool and leave?â
Lisa grinned. âNaw, theyâd turn into prunes before I got back. I merely switched some appointments with another therapist so Iâd be freed up.â She plopped into a chair.
Megan glanced up over her pink wool, which had grown considerably since yesterday. If Megan knitted when she was worried, sheâd have that sweater finished tonight, Kelly figured. âDid you see Mimi pacing the foyer?â
âOhhhh, yeah,â Kelly said. âI tried to calm her down.â
âDonât worry about it, Kelly. Sheâs simply being a mom. You gals are family to her, you know,â Burt said over the relaxing hum of the wheel as his fingers worked the roving.
âOkay, folks,â Kelly said, retrieving a spiral notebook from her tote bag. âNow that weâre all here, letâs see what weâve got.â Glancing over her shoulders at the browsing customers wandering about, she added, âAnd remember to keep it down. We donât want to alarm the locals.â
âIâll start,â Burt said, letting the wheel slow to a stop. âThe subjectâs record is clean.
